Paint application is one of the most common types of refreshing pool surfaces. For this reason, you may ask, how can I paint the pool? Pool painting comes in a variety of colors to color the pool surface and is a cheap alternative to more elaborate finish options. When trying to paint a pool, you must first select the appropriate paint, prepare the pool properly, and follow all manufacturer’s application guidelines. With the right materials and a little time and effort, you can have a brand new swimming pool without breaking the surface.

DETERMINE TYPE OF PAINT
Buy the same type of paint used on your pool surface before: epoxy, chlorinated rubber, or acrylic.
Take out a part and have it tested by your local paint dealer to determine the type of paint used.

CLEANING AND REPAIR
Drain all the water from the pond and remove leaves, dirt or debris.
Fill or correct existing cracks and holes in hydraulic cement. Follow the cement manufacturer’s instructions.
Clean the concrete surface.
Remove any old paint using a power washer or scraper and wire brush. Make sure all loose paint is removed, then clean the area.
Use 50% water and 50% muriatic acid acid wash mixture to clean the pool surface. Scrub the walls and floor thoroughly with the scrubbing brush, then rinse the entire surface with clean water.
Clean the surface again with tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) to neutralize the acid and remove areas of heavy oil or grease. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water.

Sewers, lamps, stairs etc. Re-wash the entire pool included. Pump the standing water and wait 3-5 days for the pool surface to dry. Only acrylic paint can be applied to moist surfaces.
Apply the paint with the extension roller. Start deep and head to the bottom of the pool. Use a brush to cut in tight spaces around pool fixtures such as lights, drains, and valves.
Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, especially when using an epoxy paint as a requirement of timing is critical for proper adhesion. Generally, you should wait 3 to 5 days for the paint to dry before refilling the pool with water.
Fill the freshly painted pool with water and adjust the filter and chemical adjustments to ensure proper care.
